On Tuesday, pushing to overturn its platform's privacy rules, Facebook said it was developing a tool that allowed users to control data about their online activity from other apps and websites.
The new tool is to give clients access to their so-called "off-Facebook activities" - ads that have been returned to Facebook for targeting - and give them the option to delete it.
"Off-Facebook Activity allows you to see a summary of apps and websites that send us information about your activity and, if you wish, clear this account from your account," it said in a statement.
It's another way of giving people more transparency and control over Facebook, "it said.
Currently, commercial websites visited by a customer who has a Facebook account may send Facebook details of that visit, in order to persuade the social network to display ads about that product related to the product they searched for.
The new Facebook tool allows users to see a summary of the information that other applications and websites have sent to Facebook through business tools such as the Facebook Pixel or Facebook login.
Then they have the option of disconnecting this information from their account or all future Facebook activity.
The new feature will be rolled out first in Ireland, South Korea and Spain and then elsewhere in the coming months, Facebook said.
"We hope this can have some impact on our business, but we believe that giving people control over their data is even more important," it says.
Last month, US regulators recorded a $ 5 billion fine on Facebook for violating data protection in a wide-ranging settlement that called for privacy controls and surveillance on social networks.
"We have agreed to pay a ত historical fine, but more importantly, we are about to make some major structural changes to how we build the product and operate this company," said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO.
"We're going to set a whole new standard for our industry," he said.
