Trump renews his proposal to mediate Kashmir's 'explosive' situation

US President Donald Trump called the Kashmir situation "explosive" and said that both Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were in "extremely difficult conditions". He renewed his proposal for mediation.

The president made the remarks during a news briefing in Washington DC on Tuesday.

"They've been discussing this for years, even under different names. But… Kashmir is a very complicated place. You have Hindus and you have Muslims, and I wouldn't say they have become so great. That's what he did to you right now," He told reporters.

"And you have millions of people who want to be ruled by others and possibly both parties. And you have two countries that haven't fared well in a long time. And frankly, this is a very explosive situation, "he said.

He called on the Prime Minister and Prime Minister Modi and called them friends of both them and their "great people". "They are great people. And they love their country. And they are in a very difficult situation, "he said. He mentioned the phone calls he had with both premieres, calling for Kashmir tensions.

“Kashmir is a very difficult situation. And, you know, we're talking - it's been around for decades and decades. Shooting. I don't mean shooting like a rifle, I mean heavy weapons, like shooting big howlers. And it's been going on for a long time, "President Trump said.

"So, you know, I think we're helping the situation. But you know that there is a serious problem between these two countries. And I will do my best to mediate or something. Great relationship with both, but they are not exactly friends at the moment. A complex situation. It has a lot to do with religion. Religion is a complex issue, "he said.

India and Pakistan have been at odds since India repealed Article 377 of its constitution on August 7. This cancellation invalidates the special status given to Kashmir as an autonomous state.
