Marvel's superhero films could be left without their most famous character after negotiations broke out between Spider-Man and a rival Sony-owned studio, Hollywood Media reported on Tuesday.
Marvel Cinemas has grossed $ 22 billion worldwide at the box office, and British actor Tom Holland's Spider-Man has become one of the most lucrative franchise growing history figures in movie history.
But the teenage web-slinger has been the "crown jewel" of the Marvel comic book empire for decades based on the films on which Sonny owns the film's rights to the character.
He began appearing in Marvel's "universe of films" after almost an unprecedented, and still extremely secretive, deal with two Hollywood giants in 2015, co-producing and splitting gains across two studio films.
Multiple Hollywood news outlets on Tuesday said the partnership was now broken after Disney and Sony failed in financial terms for future films. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feig - widely credited with unprecedented upheaval in comic book movies of the past decade - will no longer be able to produce Sony's standalone Spider-Man films, according to Deadline, which has broken the news.
This makes it "almost certain" that the Spider-Man character will be absent from crossover appearances in future Marvel films, as Hollywood reporter Graeme Macmillan reported.
"In the end, this is more of a problem for Marvel than Sony," he wrote, referring to how the Spider-Man franchise has become the "face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe" by the recent movie.
According to Deadline, Marvel Parent Disney wanted to significantly raise its financial stake in future Spider-Man films, with Sony refusing to change existing terms. Financially, Spider-Man is one of the most successful superheroes in movie history.
Since the collaboration agreement, Holland's Spider-Man iteration has appeared in a total of five Marvel Studios and Sony films, grossing nearly $ 8 billion worldwide.
Beginning with his role in Captain America: In a character starring in the Civil War series, 'The most recent outing, Spider-Man: Away from home.
They included Avengers: Endgame, the highest grossing movie of all time.
At Comic-Con last month, Marvel Studios set a deadline for movie and television shows scheduled for the next two years, including new outings for popular characters Thor, Black Widow, Doctor Strange and Loki - but none of the Spider-Man characters have been featured.
Last year, Sony made an Oscar-winning Spider-Man animation separate from the Marvel Studios domain, as well as a standalone film focusing on the popular Spider-Man villain Venom.
Neither Sony nor Disney have commented publicly on this report.
